This Cake Photo Is Going Viral For A Sweet Reason

Standard

When Lisa Sarber Aldrich of Grand Rapids, Michigan asked a grocery store bakery employee to write on a cake for her, she thought it was a task that was easy as pie.

What she got in return looked a little half-baked -- but, being a decent human being, she didn’t overreact.

“I looked her in the eye and said ‘thank you’ before I even looked at the cake,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “After looking, I nervously laughed and headed to check out -- it didn't really matter to me that it looked so bad -- I thought people would think it was funny.”

The other cashiers gathered around, even taking photos. Aldrich soon learned why the writing was so noteworthy.

“The girl who wrote that has Autism," Aldrich recalls another cashier telling her. "Thank you for smiling and thanking her -- even though she's not supposed to write on cakes, you probably made her day."

Since Aldrich posted the photo on her Facebook page, the post has gone viral receiving over 100,000 shares on Facebook alone.

Aldrich says she isn't seeking recognition of any kind. Rather, she was simply pointing out the importance of being kind to everyone, no matter the circumstance.

“We believe this story seems to resonate with people because it sends the message that a little kindness can go a long way,” Meijer spokesman Frank Guglielmi told NBC News.

Guglielmi also confirmed the details of Aldrich's story to NBC News, and added the chain is proud to employ people with disabilities.
